How Songsmith works
Songsmith selects chords based on the source music you record. You choose the style and sing the notes; they detect the key and generate the accompaniment. When you sing, the software does a measure-by-measure frequency analysis and uses that analysis to choose which chords to play. It also uses the knowledge of how well different chords follow each other to set up the chord progression.
These chords then leverage what Microsoft researchers Dan Morris and Sumit Basu call "style based accompaniment," and Songsmith's implementation is built on technologies used in PG Music's Band in a Box, which Songsmith has licensed. The software generates chords based on studies of how musical accompaniments generally work.
"There might be, for example, twenty seven things that a Jazz piano does while playing back an A minor or a dozen things that a Rock guitar typically does while playing a C," Morris explained.
These typical accompaniment styles form the basis of the chord generation part of the software. PG Music's algorithm uses the style data to pick the notes played back for that chord, providing arpeggios or broken chords, among other musical choices. The result, in Songsmith, is a complete workflow from voice input to finished chorded progression. You can then export that music to disk, play it back, and share it with others.
"We captured in a computer algorithm, the essence of the music," Morris summarized. According to Morris, this technology helps musicians break out of ruts by allowing them to vary the accompaniments so that each song created doesn't necessarily sound exactly like every other song they have written.
